Theater.
Writer. Director. Dramaturg. Producer.
Though I grew up as an after-school actor in the shadow of Broadway, I was performing for nearly a decade before I realized that I wanted to spend my life working in the theater. After all, the saying goes, you should only pursue a career in the arts if you can’t imagine yourself doing anything else. All it took was one rehearsal of the first musical I co-wrote — hearing my lyrics about hope and fear and progress sung in resounding four-part harmony — for my imagination to irrevocably falter. Since then, I have tried my damnedest to support theater that serves community, promotes equity, and fosters empathy.
My writing for the stage has been featured at the Loeb Experimental Theater, the Agassiz Theater, and the Harvard Playwrights’ Festival, among other venues. During the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020–21, I virtually premiered the radio opera Light Like Fire (co-composed with Ian Chan and since featured on the Harvard University Choir’s 2023 European tour), the song “39 Weeks” (co-written with James Rushin for Playdate Theatre’s 2020 Holiday Special), and the play Lookouts (in a reading directed by Lou Moreno and starring Ben Dreier and Karina Cowperthwaite.). I’ve also contributed dramaturgy for Diane Paulus’s revival of 1776, which premiered at the American Repertory Theater in spring 2022 and reopened at the American Airlines Theatre this fall. You can follow these links to learn more about my two major musical theater writing projects: The More You Know and Cruising Altitude.
When I’m not telling stories on the page, I’m telling them in space as a director. Credits include the Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert & Sullivan Players’ fall 2021 production of The Pirates of Penzance (photos by Aiyana White below), the Harvard College Opera 2022 mainstage production of Le nozze di Figaro, and a improvisation-driven production of The Birthday Party in spring 2020 at the Loeb Experimental Theater, among others. I also served as music production assistant for SIX during its residency at the American Repertory Theater, and produced several shows during my time as an undergraduate student at Harvard University, where I studied English (playwriting track); Music (composition track); and Theater, Dance and Media.
Most recently, I’ve assistant stage managed productions for The Longwood Players (Chelsea, MA) and Fresh Ink Theatre (Boston, MA). I also co-created and directed a devised musical theater program for adults with disabilities in collaboration with Yachad New England (Brookline, MA).
